I remember being at work and hearing on the radio that we sold him to Chelsea and I was more angry at his sale than most of the other " stars " that we sold off , just didn't see it coming for some reason , Christ knows why should have been used to it under that liar and money grabber Brown .

Police never charged him re the toilet seat.

Nothing to go on!

I DON'T think he actually nicked a toilet seat.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
East,

Yes, apologies, I cited 2003/04 when I meant 02/03. It was the relegation year. But other than that, it is exactly as I described - he played almost half of that season's games for us. Because he returned from loan at Millwall, where he had been earlier that season. He then walked into our side, and played well as the team's form improved - to the point where we almost stayed up.

But like I said...

He was on loan at Millwall.
He was recalled early to play for our first team.
He played most of our remaining games.
We got relegated, narrowly.
We sold him to Chelsea, despite him having signed a four-year deal just months earlier and Brown saying that he would not be sold.
Other things happened involving Chelsea, Pompey, Liverpool and the like.
He got involved with a toilet seat at B&Q.
It was all a bit weird.
He was a good player.
Hope he enjoys his retirement.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
I thought ...
a) that he was a very good player
b) that WE saw far too little of him
c) that he’d retired about 3 years ago

Was a damn fine player as a kid and into his mid-20s, and then he "plateaued" - albeit at a high level.

It all seemed to coincide with the toilet seat saga.

I wrote to Terry Brown about Glen Johnson just after he was sold to Chelsea. Suffice to say we did not become pen pals.

Glen was a fine player who had a good career. If Roeder had the courage of his convictions, and played Glen from the start of the 2003/04 season, rather than loan him out for the first half of that year, I'm quite sure we'd have stayed up. He recalled Glen from loan at Millwall, landed Brevett for a song, and suddenly we could drop the decrepit Nigel Winterburn and out of position Repka (who was a terrible full back, but a better centre-half). The team improved considerably when we had two proper, younger full-backs.

Cue the sofa perfectionistas on here banging on about how Glen didn't do this or that...

According to West Ham Statistics site, Glen Johnson didn't do either this or that which you claim for him,
Played for the first team 14 times in the 2002/3 season between Jan and May. Sold to Chelsea for £6m after we got relegated.

Pretty much as I remember it. I might be wrong

Great potential but.....

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
I was thinking about our 'golden generation' recently, and completely forgot about Glen Johnson. Excellent player.

To think with that crop of players we had back then, we got rid of Redknapp, and replaced him with Roeder! Not that Roeder should have been given all the stick he received, but he shouldn't been anywhere near being in charge of us.

You have to hand it to us as a club, when we fuck things up, we do it in style!!

;-)

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
Another disappointing departure. The last of a golden era of academy players.
There have been one or two since like Mark Noble and Jack Collison but no one that has come close the likes of Rio, FFL, Joe Cole, Carrick and Johnson
Lets hope we can be more interesting to Declan Rice.

Johnson was a very good right back but never fully made it

Johnson for England anyone ? ;)

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
I think Johnson could have played anywhere across the back 4 and probably in midfield as well. If he was starting out now would probably be the perfect wing back. Was gutted when he left, in fact I'm still gutted at the sale of all our crown jewels back then what a West Ham side we could have had if they all had stayed. The Club of missed opportunity!!!

Wasn’t he the first splash of the cash from Roman ?
